How to read the answers

Of the 200 devices listed here, 98 work wherever they were bought, 38 work only in their Japanese-market version, 58 cannot hold a Japanese IC card at all and 6 could not be confirmed. Anything we could not confirm is shown as "check before you rely on it" rather than as a yes.

Why Apple and Android differ so sharply

Apple fits FeliCa to every iPhone from the iPhone 8 onward, in every market. Android manufacturers fit it to the handsets they sell in Japan and leave it out — or switch it off in software — everywhere else. That is why every modern iPhone on this list says yes and most international Android models say no.

What changes in 2027

Samsung and JR East announced in April 2026 that Galaxy phones sold outside Japan will support FeliCa from the first half of 2027, starting with Welcome Suica Mobile. Until that actually ships, every international Galaxy page here says no.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which model I have?

On an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then About, and read the Model Name and Model Number. On Android, open Settings, then About phone. The model number is what separates a Japanese-market handset from an identical-looking international one.

My device is not on this list. What should I assume?

Assume it does not work unless it is an iPhone 8 or later. For Android, the safe assumption for a handset bought outside Japan is no, and the way to be sure is whether the phone has the Osaifu-Keitai app preinstalled.

Does an Apple Watch need the iPhone nearby?

No. Once a transit card is on the watch and Express Mode is on, it taps gates on its own. The card lives on one device at a time, so decide whether it sits on the phone or the watch.

Can a tablet hold a Suica?

No. iPads and Android tablets do not carry the FeliCa element used for transit, so a phone or a watch is required.
