Can you use Suica on Apple Watch Series 2?

The Apple Watch Series 2 can hold a Japanese IC card, but only the version sold in Japan. That makes the answer depend on where your particular unit came from, so check the model number before you plan around it.

Yes, with conditions Which cards it can hold: Suica only · Apple · 2016

Setting it up

Open the Wallet app, tap the plus button, choose Transit Card and then Suica. Enter an opening amount — the minimum is 1,000 yen, the ceiling is 20,000 yen — and pay with a card already in Apple Pay. Then set the Suica as your Express Transit Card so the gate opens without unlocking the phone.

Where the money comes from

A foreign-issued Visa is the card travellers most often see refused at the top-up step, and the refusal comes from the payment network rather than from your bank. Mastercard, American Express and JCB usually go through. Cash never fails: any station ticket machine or convenience-store register will top up a card held in a phone.

What a Suica actually pays for

Trains and buses across the ten mutually accepted IC card networks, plus convenience stores, vending machines, station kiosks, coin lockers and a growing number of taxis. It is a prepaid balance capped at 20,000 yen, so it will not cover a hotel deposit, a car hire or a reserved Shinkansen seat bought at a machine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Suica on a Apple Watch Series 2?

Only if your Apple Watch Series 2 is the version sold in Japan. The Japanese unit carries FeliCa and works; the units sold in other countries do not have the chip, and nothing you can change in software will add it.

Does a Apple Watch Series 2 bought outside Japan work with Suica?

No. Only the Japanese-market Apple Watch Series 2 carries FeliCa. Check the model number or the box before you plan around it.

Which IC cards can a Apple Watch Series 2 hold?

Suica only — not PASMO or ICOCA. All of them are accepted interchangeably for ordinary journeys across the nationwide mutual-use network, so it makes no practical difference which one you end up with.

Can I leave my phone behind and tap with just the Apple Watch Series 2?

Yes, once the card is on the watch and Express Mode is on, the watch taps gates on its own. The balance lives on whichever device holds the card, so decide up front whether the Suica sits on the phone or on the watch.
