Setting up Welcome Suica Mobile
Welcome Suica Mobile is JR East’s own app for visitors. It speaks English, it does not want a Japanese Apple ID, and it expects a foreign credit card. It also has one hard edge you need to know about before you load money onto it.
- Confirm the iPhone is an XR or XS or later, updated to iOS 17.2 or higher. There is no Android version.
- Install Welcome Suica Mobile from the App Store.
- Open the app and issue a new Welcome Suica. No account registration is required.
- Add money using the card registered to Apple Pay.
- Add the resulting card to Apple Wallet and set Express Mode.
- Before you leave Japan, spend the balance down to zero — buy a drink, a snack, anything.
Where you can issue it before you fly
JR East allows pre-arrival issue from South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Vietnam. From any other country the issue step fails until you are in Japan; relaunch the app after you land, allow location access and try again.
The 180-day expiry
The balance expires 180 days after issue and JR East states plainly that refunds are not available. This is the single biggest difference from an ordinary Suica in Apple Wallet, which has no expiry at all. Load small amounts often rather than one large amount.
Nightly maintenance
Registration, top-up and device transfer are unavailable from 02:00 to 04:00 Japan time; usage history is unavailable from 00:50 to 05:00. Tapping through gates and paying at shops are not affected, so a late-night arrival can still ride — it just cannot add money until 04:00.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Welcome Suica Mobile app for Android?
No. JR East publishes the app for iPhone only. An Android traveller needs a Japanese-market handset with Osaifu-Keitai for Google Wallet, or a physical card bought at the airport.
Can I get my money back when I leave?
No. JR East states that the Welcome Suica Mobile balance is not refundable and that you should use it up at airports, stations and shops before you go.
Which is better, Welcome Suica Mobile or a normal Suica in Apple Wallet?
If you can fund a normal Suica in Apple Wallet, that is the better card: no expiry, no forfeited balance. Welcome Suica Mobile earns its place when you are flying from one of the six pre-issue countries and want a funded card before you land, or when your payment card is refused by the ordinary flow.
