Adding Suica to Apple Wallet
You do not need a Japanese Apple ID, a Japanese address or an iPhone bought in Japan. Any iPhone from the iPhone 8 onward carries the FeliCa chip that Japanese gates read, and Apple Wallet can create a brand-new Suica in under a minute.
- Check the model first. iPhone 8 and later works anywhere in the world. iPhone 7 works only if it was sold in Japan, and only for Suica.
- Open the Wallet app and tap the plus button in the top right corner.
- Choose Transit Card, then Japan, then Suica.
- Enter the amount to load. The minimum is 1,000 yen and the card can never hold more than 20,000 yen.
- Confirm with a card already in Apple Pay. If the payment is declined, tap Cancel and create the card with a smaller amount, or add money in cash at a station machine afterwards.
- Open Wallet settings and set the Suica as your Express Transit Card so you can tap without unlocking.
- Test it at a convenience store before your first train ride, so you find out about a problem at a counter rather than at a gate.
Which iPhone models can do this
Apple lists iPhone 8 / iPhone 8 Plus or later for Suica, PASMO and ICOCA, with no requirement about where the phone was bought. For Suica alone, Apple also lists iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus or later. The iPhone 7 generation is the only one where the region genuinely matters, because FeliCa shipped in the Japanese units and not in the units sold elsewhere.
What happens to the card when you go home
A Suica created in Apple Wallet has no fixed expiry date, so it simply sits there with its balance until your next trip. It is not the same as a Welcome Suica Mobile card, which expires 180 days after issue and is not refundable.
If the top-up is refused
A declined top-up is almost always the payment network rather than your bank. Foreign Visa cards are the common failure. Add a Mastercard or American Express to Apple Pay, or skip the card entirely and feed banknotes into any station ticket machine — cash never fails.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Japanese Apple ID to add Suica?
No. The transit card flow inside Apple Wallet does not check the region of your Apple Account. What can block you is the payment card you try to fund the opening balance with, not your Apple ID.
Can I add Suica before I fly to Japan?
Yes, in Apple Wallet you can create the card from anywhere. That is different from the Welcome Suica Mobile app, where JR East only allows pre-arrival issue from South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Vietnam.
Will Suica work if my iPhone battery dies?
Recent iPhones keep Express Mode available for a few hours in power reserve after the phone shuts down, but this is a fallback and not a guarantee. Carry enough cash to buy a paper ticket.
